since it’s inception in 1991 on the streets of glasgow, soma records has stood for uncompromising quality of the highest level in every area it operates. stuart mcmillan & orde meikle formed slam during the acid house explosion in the late 80’s and then together with friends glenn gibbons & dave clarke they forged one of electronic music’s most widely known and well respected labels. with mcmillan & meikle as the figureheads with their slam project and influenced by the early detroit techno scene, soma quickly began to develop it’s own sound and with their eyes firmly fixed on a vision of the future, the team began the quest to instill their unquenchable thirst for electronic music into the world around them. soma quickly became an international brand as slam’s anthemic “positive education” brought about an electronic renaissance that saw the group thrust into the limelight and green lit the furious rise of the label.

bangers and ash is back. the rough & ready series of records that spawned the wider styles upon styles imprint has always challenged artists (clay wilson, certain creatures, best available technology to name a few) to work their sonics for both the club (bangers) and the clouds (ash), now welcoming contakt to the family in 2018. a native of michigan and a long-time resident of brooklyn, contakt cofounded the boundary-pushing club night turrbotaxr with previous releases on argot, icee hot and second shift and detritus feature on the ash side with a spacious wash of atmospheric analog synth constructs, while shut off notice and ndo are bangers that divebomb deep into classic detroit techno. each record has been screen-printed, stamped and stickered by contakt and sus, with mixing by phil moffa and mastering by josh bonati.

grammy award winner louie vega is known worldwide as one of the finest creators and purveyors of house music, both as an individual artist / producer / dj and as partner with kenny dope in the renowned production team known as masters at work. his multiple musical talents have also brought him much acclaim in the genres of salsa, afro-beat, jazz, hip-hop and soul. last year he reached another career milestone when his album “louie vega starring...xxviii” was nominated at the 2017 grammys for best dance album, which further solidified his position as one of the industry’s premier artist / producers. but not everyone knows about louie’s deep respect, admiration and knowledge of the disco genre that laid the foundation for so much music that moves crowd on dancefloors and festivals today.

recording this record in cuba was a special moment in my life, louie says. for the first time elements of life, anane vega, josh milan, luisito quintero, gene perez, axel tosca and louie vega embarked on a trip to cuba to participate in two beats one soul album on rvmk records. the results were four tracks on the album and one of them a very unique song music and life featuring the sultry and angelic voice of anane vega. the song was penned by josh milan, and louie vega contributed with the music. gene perez on electric bass, josh & axel tosca on keyboards, and luisito quintero on percussion. released as a digital single recently, its now on many radio and club charts worldwide, as well featured on compilations. on top of all this momentum vega records, then reached out to rvmk records and licensed the track for a special picture vinyl release. the picture vinyl is a collectors piece, get your hands on it fast as there will be a limited number made. anan evega on the picture vinyl with her signature as well, colorful and sonically delicious!

the score for “the theory of everything” is created by the recently deceased (9 february 2018) icelandic composer jóhann jóhannsson. jóhannsson’s intricate compositions provide a stunning backdrop to the romantic drama about stephen and jane hawking, portrayed in the film by eddie redmayne (“les misérables”) and felicity jones (“the amazing spider-man 2”). he has composed music for many films including scoring director denis villeneuvue’s film “prisoners” and josh c. waller’s “mccanick”. limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on transparent blue 180 gram double vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve.

the late 1960s / early 70s brought about a change in sound for many gospel groups. producers and label heads at abc peacock recognized that the traditional sound of gospel needed to be updated to appeal to the younger market. the groups started to incorporate elements of soul and funk with arrangements influenced by the r&b records of the time. this compilation presents 13 striking examples of this seismic shift in black music by some of the greatest groups in gospel music’s rich heritage.

italian duos nice7 & dirty channels join forces for the first time to deliver the acid induced feelings ep on crosstown rebels. the release features two exceptional originals with torontos nathan barato bringing his signature heavy sounds into play for the remix. nicola daniele and cesare marocco aka nice7 are amongst the latest italian stars to emerge in dance music. since 2005, the year in which the two of them paired up, they have released on labels like noir music, get physical, remote area, suara, defected and gruuv. dirty channels are simone & leme, who started working together in 2008 after long single dj careers. releases soon followed for big labels such as josh wink s ovum, hot creations sub-label hot waves and culprit la as well as licenses on several defected compilations. nathan barato worked his way onto the world stage with releases on the likes of cajual, saved and hot creations. 2016 also saw him as resident for jamie jones paradise at dc10 in ibiza. here he delivers a punchy remix to dominate the dancefloor, centered around a hefty bassline, tight drum patterns and slick vocal cuts.

josh praus has been involved in san francisco’s bay area scene for the last two decades. a prolific collector and player of records, what we tellin’ them marks his first public outing as a producer. as debuts go, it’s pretty darn impressive.
